I have been tying to trace back my Irish ancestors and am stuck at one of my great aunts.

Please bare with me, this is where I get confused

 A relative has told me that my great grandad Patrick Collins was possibly know also as Patrick McCallen (or Macallom). Has anyone heard of this? Is it a path to go down or will I be going off on a wild goose chase.

Would appreciate any advice on this

O Coileain and O Cuilleain are the normal Irish translations of Collins
Mac meaning son of is usede with some surnames and could possibly have been used to create an Irish version of Collins at one time
