baptismal certificate
« on: Thursday 17 March 11 22:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have a been given a baptismal certificate of one of my ancesters from 1870,and i wondered if anyone  could tell me what exactly a baptismal certificate is used for?

Did they take the details  from the parish register and put them onto a certificate just to make them look nice,or is there some other reason?.

Thanks

Hi zx123
Before civil registration, a baptismal certificate is often the only way you can establish a birth date or a reasonable guess at it.
In some religions, e.g. RC, you'd have to produce your baptismal certificate before you could receive other sacraments like marriage.
Others will probably give you a few more reasons but that's all I can think of at this time of the morning.   ;D

I still I have mine, it falls into the category of 'looking nice'.

I know of a situation where a lady was born in 1919, had a baptism certificate (without parents names though) but there is no entry in the register of births at the register office where it should be. It seems her parents registered their other children but not her.

However, there was a family batch baptism and 3 children were all baptised on the same day.

Her sons are now using a certified copy of these entries in the baptsim register as proof of her relationship to her sister.
