hi Heather,there are quite a few James Hardie's born c1816 on the 1841 census.None seem to be in Dunbartonshire,but there is a James Hardie living with a family called Cram in Barony parish,Lanarkshire.James is 25yrs and occupation is painter j.J probably stands for journeyman.They are living at Richard Street,West End.

Heather,1841 was the first census so i don't think you will find him with his parents.What was his occupation in 1851,was he a painter?

On the same Christening batch as your possible James HARDIE Chrsiened to Robert Hardie/Jane Hardie nee Fleming are;
ROBERT 25 October 1812
JAMES, 05 June 1814
WILLIAM 21 August 1817

Now a William Hardie down as born c 1821 Cumbernauld, Dumbarton is living in Cadder, Lanarkshire also with his Family.
If he is a Brother he may have dropped his age a bit as the Wife is younger!
He is a Miner also.

Its late here so I will have another look at this tomorrow if no one else has helped by then.
