Gilyeart family
« on: Sunday 20 March 11 17:08 GMT (UK) »
Oh boy, what a difficult name.  We're trying to find the Gilyeart's (spelt so many different ways) who we've traced back to Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in the mid 1800s.  Specifically we have Sarah born 1862 in Thorne, Yorkshire.  Her father (Thomas Gilliatt we think) married Elizabeth Jackson in Thorne in 1845 but the family is splintered and we can't find Sarah with any relatives.  Can anyone out there help?  Thanks.

Hi heywood,
We have Thomas as being Sarah Elizabeth's father.  He's married to Elizabeth Jackson and we can find them in the 1851 and 1861 census.  They had William, Mary, Thomas, John, Hannah, Jackson and George in 1861.  We have Sarah being born in 1862 but we can't link her to the same (or any other) family until she marries on 4 September 1884 (she married John House).

Thomas was an agricultural labourer.  The places we have are Belton, Crowle, Thorne and Attercliffe.

Linking it all together is proving difficult.

I was looking in wrong county.
I was looking in Thorne Yorkshire. ::)

What evidence do you have that Sarah -you called her Sarah Elizabeth in your second post, is of this family?

Hiya....freebmd gives James House as Sarahs husband...not John ...presume that was little mistake
there are only 3  results for Gilyeart on IGI ...all in Yorkshire
John  Gilyeart b 1828 Newsholm, yorks
Clara Jane Gilyeart b 1875 Hemingborough , Yorks father Robert / mother Jane
John Gilyeart death in 1900 born 1828 as above
allan :)
ADDED...I now see your problem...so many possible different spellings....you have my sympathy
Heywood...if you go on freebmd and put in Sarah Gilyeart  all events...you will see Sarah Elizabeth is given on her birth and marriage...and she was registered in Thorne
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Hi,

heywood, we're working up and have found Sarah Elizabeth Gilyeart marrying James House (family knowledge and we have the marriage certificate) in 1884.  Census' of 1891, 1901 and 1911 have Sarah being born in Belton, Lincolnshire.  Her marriage certificate has her father as Thomas, a farmer.  We're trying to find a link to the only other Gilyearts with this spelling that lived in Belton from 1841 onwards according to the census'.

Belton in Lincolnshire is close to Crowle and Thorne, all of which are around the boundary between Lincolnshire and Yorkshire and we suspect that the boundaries have been redrawn over the years.

Garsonite,

Yes, you're right, she was married to James House, not John (that was James' father and grandfather!).  It doesn't help that Thomas' marriage to Elizabeth Jackson showed the spelling of his surname as Gilliatt.

Not easy.

Guys

We think (after two days and 44 spellings - literally) we've found them in Belton on the 1871 census, with Gilyeart written clearly but transcribed at Gilycart!!

We can now put them all together as a family ....

However, we now have a problem with the House family from Somerset - but that's for another day!

Thanks for your help and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

From a very happy bunny
