Finding passenger lists from Ireland
« on: Sunday 20 March 11 19:57 GMT (UK) »
I'm guessing the family I'm looking for arrived in Liverpool from Ireland between 1187 and 1888. I renewed my sub with ancestry in the hope I'd find them in the passenger lists, but unless I'm doing something wrong I can't find any lists of passengers whose journey started in Ireland and ended in Liverpool.

My aim is to find out whereabouts in Ireland they came from as my son hopes to visit the country later this year and would really love to visit the county his father's family came from. My own family started in Scotland and England, and I'm still new to Irish research. Can anyone help please?

Thanks
Lesley

Ireland was part of the U.K. and no records were (or are) kept for people travelling between Ireland and England, Scotland and Wales.

P.S. Ancestry have very few Irish records.

Thanks for that Aghadowey. I probably mis-read the advertising - I thought they'd acquired hundreds of new Irish records. I'll keep on digging, but may well have to admit defeat on this one. I'm meeting the same problem as in my Scottish research - so many people with the same surname, who are not related. The difference is you do have some 'family memory' with your own family - I'm starting from scratch in this case.

Is there an Irish equivalent of Scotlandspeople (or ancestry)?

Lesley

There are different resources available for Ireland but certificates are not available to view as on Scotland's People.

To find Irish relatives you need to know both their religion and where they lived. Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.

My problem is I have no idea whereabouts they came from. It's my ex's family - I have no contact with them now, and the only thing I know is they definitely came from Ireland. They were also definitely Catholics. I'm building a picture of the family very slowly - not helped by the fact that I keep finding families with the same names all over Liverpool and in Lancashire. I have been given a couple of very useful links via Rootschat, but was hoping for an Irish scotlandspeople to break down some of the brick walls.

Thanks for your help aghadowey.

If you post up whatever information on the family that you have, such as names & dates, maybe somebody can help narrow things down. Don't post anything on living people though.
