Two Service Numbers?
« on: Sunday 20 March 11 20:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Could anyone help explain this please?

My ancestor appears to have two service numbers.  According to his WW1 medal card he has a RFC service number of 41267 and underneath it looks like Linc R service number 42200.

I also have a copy of his serving soldiers will dated 20th November 1916 where the wording RFC and service number have been crossed out and replaced by a number of 42200 and some writing which looks like Linc but I can't read the second word.

Can anyone explain why he would have two service numbers?

Thanks in advance

There are many on here more expert than me, but in WW1 territorial regiments had a number change around the end of 1916 I think. A change from a regiment to the RFC might also account for the change.

Basically they were regimental numbers, rather than army numbers.
Hence transfer to a new regiment, get a new number.

That explains a transfer from a regiment to the RFC, but my father spent the entire war in the Cambridgeshire regiment and collected two army numbers.

That case is covered by what you suggested in the earlier post, you were right.
But obviously transferring unit, you would automatically get a new number
