my grandmother
« on: Monday 21 March 11 10:48 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for info of any kind on Sophia Josephs (married name...born Heller or Hillman) in Dvinsk, Latvia (now Dvaugapils, Russia)....Her husband was Philip Josephs. They married in Glasgow and lived there 7 years from about 1899 till early 20th c. when went to New Zealand.  I was alerted tothis site by a researcher in NZ who was on the track of my grandfather, Philip.
thanks for any help....
e.g. what ship did they sail from LIbau to glasgow on?  anything about their life or residence in Latvia prior to sailing....
Anything about their occupations in Glasgow.
caroline j.

Welcome to Rootschat Caroline  :D
they married in Glasgow in 1897. I got this from the free search on the Scotland's people website.
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

You will get a lot of info by registering with Scotlands People website, getting some credit and looking up Philip and Sophia's marriage cert, then their 1901 census record. (there is limited Scottish census info on Ancestry - in 1901 they were at 32 Mckinlay St with two children, and Philip was possibly a Tailor ???)

10 free credits for Scotland's People available at this site:

Register for the newsletter (all they do is send you occasional newsletters with holiday info etc) and you get a voucher code for Scotlands People

Thanks Barbara,  I do have their marriage certificate....good to have the address in glasgow.  It is much harder to obtain birth certificates or anything at all from Latvia. I did have a Latvian researcher on the job years ago but I expect all records were erased at some stage. caroline j.

Hi,

What were Philip and Sophia's parents' names from their marriage cert? It may be that Sophia came over to Scotland with parents or other family.

This looks to be them in 1901:

Philip Joseph 24, tailon (tailor?) b. Whithorn, Russia (as transcribed...)
Sophia Joseph 24 b.Whithorn, Russia
Jeannie Joseph 3 b. Glasgow
Fanny Joseph 2 b. Glasgow

Address: 32 Mckinlay St, Glasgow Govan

Monica  :)

Added: Sorry Barbara, see you had included census info already in your post  :P

With Sophia's death entry showing in 1935, parents Isaac and Emma, this looks a likely entry for her parents in 1901 also living in Govan:

Isaac Hellman 50, Furniture, Maker Cabinet
Emma Hellman 46
Abraham Hellman 22, Presser Tailor's
Lewis Hellman    18, Machinist Tailor's
William Hellman 15, Pechire (picture?) Frame Maker

Address: 10 So Cobury St, Glasgow Govan

All the Hellmans showing as born in Russia.

Well done Monica  :D

I was about to reply and suggest looking on Scotlands People for deaths 1890-1910 or so for surnames Josephs or Hellman in the Govan/Gorbals area - not such common surnames for the area.

I've just been reading old posts (or not so old really) on Philip Josephs and family, fascinating stories and searches  :)

Caroline, if these do turn out your grandmother's family, there are WW1 service papers for a Lewis Hillman, born 1887, private in the Royal Scots. A tailor's machinist by trade, shows as living at 46 Robson St Govanhill, Glasgow with his wife and family.

From the details on the service papers, I think this was their marriage:

3rd Qrt 1911: Louis Hillman and Rachel Rosenberg, Prestwich Lancashire, Vol. 8d pg. 777 (marriage date on service papers shows as 7 July 1911).

Three children's names are included, all births in Glasgow between 1912-17.

3rd Qrt 1911: Louis Hillman and Rachel Rosenberg, Prestwich Lancashire, Vol. 8d pg. 777 (marriage date on service papers shows as 7 July 1911).

This marriage took place at the New Synagogue/Beth Hamedrash Synagogue in (Prestwich area of) Manchester. Listed on the Lancashire BMD index
http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Info on the synagogue here:
http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/community/man_marriage.htm#great-new%28new%29
but no actual marriages online unfortunately, and several possible Rachel Rosenbergs in Prestwich/Salford/ Manchester on the 1901 census
