I am seeking a marriage record for my great grandparents. According to my grandmother's birth certificate her parents were married in Brisbane on November 2nd, 1912. I have been unable to find record of their marriage. Are there marriage records for Queensland/Brisbane that are unavailable online? I'm in Canada so don't have ready access to library held records.

Marriage: November 2, 1912 Brisbane
Groom: John Barnett (or Barrett) BROWN
Bride: Rosa Mary Ann MARTIN

John BROWN was born in Yorkshire, England approx. 1887. I do not know when he came to Australia.

Rosa Mary MARTIN was born December 1888 in Portsea, Portsmouth England. She apparently (according to family lore) went to Australia alone and worked as a news reporter in Brisbane.

They had one child - Mildred Joan BROWN on September 29th, 1913 born Sydney, New South Wales.

By early 1914 Rosa returned to England with Mildred. Remarried in 1918 and returned again to Australia with her husband. I have no idea what happened to John BROWN. I'm hoping the marriage certificate will list his parents and perhaps a more specific birth location.

Any help most appreciated!

Like you I am unable to find their marriage on the index.   You are searching the Qld registry's records when you search online.

Perhaps contact the Registry and request a search as you have a specific date for the marriage.

Mrs R M BROWN 25 years, no occupation and 4 month infant, Mildred J, arrived Plymouth from Sydney, on 9 Mar 1914 on the PERSIC  Country of last permanent residence Australia, County of intended permament residence England.  They travelled 3rd class.

Have you searched for a death for a Mr John Barnett/Barrett BROWN in NSW

Whom did she marry?  I can't find a marriage for a Rosa Mary BROWN or Rosa Mary MARTIN in 1918 on freebdm.  Perhaps she married only using her first given name.

The only outgoing UK passenger record I can find is for a Rose MARTIN, 22 years, domestic servant who embarked from London on the WAIPARA on 3 Nov 1911 for Brisbane.  There is another record for a Rose MARTIN 21 years, cook, on 15 Aug 1911 to Brisbane but the name is struck out on the manifest.

So sorry. I got the year wrong.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate.

26 May 1917 - Rosa Mary BROWN, 27 yrs., Spinster married James Wyld Melrose MAILER, 37 yrs., Bachelor.

Yes, it is her and her daughter traveling back to England in 1914.

John BROWN is a new discovery. I realized when I received the marriage certificate for BROWN/MAILER that Mildred was born before Rosa and James married. I have recently received a copy Mildred's birth certificate and discovered the name of her father was John BROWN.

I will contact the Registry and ask them about the marriage record for MARTIN/BROWN. I would like to find out some more about John.

Interestingly I have found an enlistment record for John Barnett Brown (mapping ANZACs site). 26 yrs in 1914. He is not married though and was born in Berwick, not Yorkshire.

Thanks for helping with this. It's exciting to unearth a "skeleton". My grandmother is deceased so I can't ask her about any of this...and I don't think I would've anyway.

John Barnett BROWN's WW1 service record is digitised on
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch/index.aspx

His mother's name is Susan and he was a motor mechanic. :)

Was the father's occupation noted on Mabel J's birth cert?

Cheers  :)

A thought...... ::)

Are you able to comment on the names MILDRED and JOAN?

Are they name which appeared eleswhere in your family line?

Given names in mysterious births and marriages do sometimes hold little clues ;)

No, I can't comment on MILDRED or JOAN. No connection anywhere in the family.

So, if that is the correct service record (and birth records - thanks!) why is he listed as not married when he was married in 1912 to Rosa Mary MARTIN? Any thoughts?

I've looked at NSW divorce records but there is no record of divorce.

Interestingly, yes, father's occupation on birth cert. for Mildred Joan BROWN is "auto mechanic". It does seem the right man.

Maybe she just said they were married when registering the birth?
