Annacramp marriage
« on: Thursday 24 March 11 01:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have received my g-g-grandparents marriage cert. They were married in 1878 at Annacramp RC Chapel.
I was hoping to find out where they were living at the time but in both cases residence is given as 'Armagh'. Would this refer to the city (where they were living by the time of the 1901 census) or the county?

Also, I was puzzled that my g-g-grandfather marked rather than signed the certificate. At the time he was in his early 30s. Yet he was able to sign he 1901 census. It just strikes me as strange that he seems to have learned to read at such an advanced age. Does this seem unusual?

In this case 'Armagh' would be the city rather than just the county.
It's not uncommon to see people using a mark to sign a register then later seeing their signature on a document. It's possible that he was uncomfortable about writing in front of other people or that the clergyman just assumed he couldn't write. I've eben come across a case where the groom signed his name for 1st marriage but gave his mark for the 2nd one a few years later in a different church!
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks. That is very good to know. As it happens, bride, groom and both witnesses have their marks rather than signatures.
Would you happen to know if the chapel at Annacramp still exists?

Thanks again,
Kevin

Hi, The church you are looking for is in Annacramph, Co Armagh,  Annacramp is in Co Tyrone and it doesn't have a church.
I think the church must have been near the  Loughgall area, as there is an Annacramph rd near Loughgall.
I have stayed in this area several times but I havent' come across  a cathlolic  church called Annacramph, I checked Diocese website and couldn't find it either.

Hi There was a Catholic Church at Annacramp but the building is no longer there. It was about 2 miles from Armagh city just off the Loughgall road, and was part of Armagh city parish so any birth/death/marriage records would be located there. Do you mind saying what your g-g-grandparents names were?

Not at all. They were John Hart, son of John Hart (a farmer), and Catherine Lappin, daughter of James Lappin (a labourer).

i notice some information on the website about annacramp chapel which used to be situate off the loughgall road outside the city of armagh. i believe that my great grandparents Edward O'Connor and Elizabeth campbell were married there sometime between 1879 and 1885 and i am trying to find out when this was also the date of death of Edward which would have been between 1885 and 1901. Could anyone help ?
