Graham family, Ampthill
« on: Saturday 26 March 11 10:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for any information,  other than the census which I think I mostly have on the Graham family who lived 1805-1820 in Ampthill, Bedfordshire.  From the IGI I have that Robert Graham married Elizabeth Gee at Flitton in 1805 and they had a son John baptised at Flitton in 1806.  From the NBI I have burials for John aged 10 in 1816 at Ampthill,  and Elizabeth aged 40 in 1821.

I think that Robert then went to Highgate in London.  I think that this couple also had children William (1811),  Francis Crafton Graham (1814) and Thomas (1816),  all in Ampthill from the later census's but I can't find any trace of any baptisms for them,  can anyone help with any further information on this illusive family.  Robert and his son Francis were gardeners.

TIA

Hello!

We are descended from William John Graham, b.1811 and have found the same records as you have.

We have noted a baptism for John Graham on 9th November 1807 at Fliiton with Silsoe though have not traced any christenings for the other 3 boys despite assistance from a researcher last year at Bedfordshire Archives.

We have not got back any further than Robert Crafton Graham and Elizabeth Gee whose marriage we have recorded as 7th July 1806 at St John the Baptist, Flitton.

We have records of the families of William, Francis and Thomas from subsequent censuses and certificates if you are interested.

What's the evidence that the Robert Graham baptised 1779 at Gt Amwell Herts was the same Robert Graham who married in Flitton with Silsoe, 30 miles away, in 1806?

Hello

William Graham b 1811 is my grt grt grt grandfather. He had a son called Willam John Graham who became a butcher, his son William Nicholas Graham worked on the London docks, his daughter Ellen had a daughter Helen who had me!
The eldest living descendent that I know of is William Nicholas's daughter Ethel - who is in her 90s now.

Has anyone checked the 1806 marriage entry to see who the witnesses were and to see if a parish of residence other than Silsoe is given?

The middle name Crafton must be relevant as it runs through the family, including Robert's burial.

We have a copy of the 1806 marriage.

Witnesses were Ann Hughes and Robert Upton.

Robert Graham and Elizabeth Gee are both recorded as 'of this parish' although Robert may not have been!

One of my ten times great grandmothers, Margaret Graham, married my 10x g. grandfather, James Deere/Deare in Shillington, in 1595. James was a widower with two children. It was Margaret's first and only marriage. They had four children, their first being another James, from whom I am descended.

Shilington is just 10km/6m from Ampthill, with Flitton and Silsoe in between. The Graham family are mentioned in Bedfordsire from at least the fourteen hundreds.
