Where is Bridget Westbury in 1911
« on: Saturday 26 March 11 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Try as I might I cannot find my Gt grandmother Bridget Westbury (nee Flynn) in Warwickshire  [Aston, Birmingham] in the 1911 Census.   She was alive at this time and in fact died 1927 (interred Witton Cemetery, Birmingham). She was born c 1852 in Galway, ireland.

She would have been a widow -her husband Henry Francis Westbury -had died only 3 months previous in January 1911.   They had married 1879 St Michaels Church, Birmingham. They lived in and raised their family In Aston (Birmingham),

All her children -Florence, Mary, Louisa & Henry- had married by the time of the Census and can be accounted for. But no Bridget.

I am fairly sure she would not have gone far and I know of no reason why she does not appear in the 1911 Census (taken 2nd April 1911). I accept she may have been institutionalised although have no evidence to support this and doubt it happened.  But even so cannot locate her even using the neighbouring counties of Staffs & Worcs.

I have tried umpteen variables, even resorting to her maiden name of Flynn(Flinn or Flyn) to no avail.    I may have to accept she just missed the Census but has anyone ideas or better luck in pinning her down.

Any help will be most appreciated.

Hi

I've had the same problem trying to find some one I know for certain was alive after 1911. I found this site

http://www.1911census.co.uk/content/default.aspx?r=24&98

and wonder if the lady I'm looking for was a suffragette supporter. Could this apply to your relation as well?

I'm not sure if one 'nipped over to Ireland' in those days but a possibility certainly, and one I had considered myself.

Her late husband (she was a widow of 3 months) had been a Surgical Truss maker and may have provided for her to allow her to do this.  He was from Birmingham and her married family were all in the Midlands. Her Irish parents had long since passed on and I know nothing of any siblings or cousins remaining in Ireland.

Something to bear in mind particularly as extensive Uk searching has been unsuccessful.   Thanks

Here's the link to the Irish 1901 and 1911 census.
But it doesn't reveal a Bridget Westbury though.

Hi Carol, a big thanks for the link, that is going to be useful in future.   Meanwhile I am sad to relate my own searching failed to find Bridget.   Especially disappointing because I had an inspiration. Also missing from the Uk 1911 Census was Florence Cunnington(1880), nee Westbury - (Bridget's daughter) and her husband Peter Cunnington - (Married 1909 in Birmingham).

My inspiration muted the fact that maybe Florence had taken her mother over to Ireland with husband Peter shortly after their bereavement.    However my hope was short lived because like its UK counterpart, I cannot find any of them. Even with wild card and open county searches.   So back to the drawing board.

Never mind I appreciate your help and the the link .

it is possible that they were travelling between England and Ireland at the time of the census, so weren't actually "living" anywhere?
Just a thought as I have a large chunk of family missing on the 1871 census - they were from Gloucestershire, but on the weekend of the census one of them got married in Birmingham, so I assume they were "in transit" on the night of the census.
Johnson, Crankshaw, Burdett, Shaw, Dawson/Dulson, Whitebread/Whitbread, Drane, Hyett, Holtaway, Thompson, Bodell, Livermore, Gee, Vernon, Smith......the list goes on....and on...and on....

Thanks for that, of course perfectly feasible. I have a number of releatives missing from Censuses but usually just the odd son or daughter from a family group. In the case of the latter if old enough they are married or if a teenager, in service somewhere. Boys are invariably serving apprenticeships and lodging away.

I think I must accept that an Ireland trip may well be the answer in Bridget's case (& her daughter and son-in-law). Being in transit might explain them slipping between the cracks.   Food for thought anyway.

Thanks again.
