"PAR 511/35/1/294 21 Aug 1827
Letter from W Stripe, Woolwich, [Kent], vestry clerk to the overseers of Winchelsea
I am desired by the overseers of the poor of this parish to transmit the annexed examination of Gilbert Wood, a parishioner of yours, and to state his desire not to be removed home if it be possible. He has been ill which threw him out of employ and his desire is that he may be relieved until he obtains another situation and if you request it this parish will relieve him with such sum as you may deem proper under his circumstances. He has been relieved and we [a]wait your reply in order that we may determine how much. The reason why this has not been sent e'er this is the overseer of this parish had laid the examination aside and forgot it; endorsed settlement examination of Gilbert Wood, now residing in the parish of Woolwich, Kent: he never rented a house of £10 a year or 4s a week, about fifteen years ago, being a single man, he hired himself to Edward Dawes of Winchelsea, esq for a year at 16 guineas a year wages and he served him for three years and upwards, he has a wife named Margaret and three children John (6 years), Mary (3 years) and Sarah (9 months), 10 August 1827
For payments see PAR 511/31/1/15 folio 43; for goods removed from the poorhouse for Wood's use see AMS 2331"
