Re;  The Elizabeth Smith who died in Sept. 1889 @ age 76 in Patrington - our Elizabeth was still alive in the 1891 census and living in Hedon (age 55)

No Cliff...it only gives what I have written...does the census you found not give where he was born.

Yes, it does say he was born in Sproatley - I was just hoping we could find some confirmation of that fact in another source.  Once he was married to Elizabeth (1861) he does not appear in any census. 
Thanks for your suggestion about M & I, but I am not sure what that is?  ???

Carol, Thanks for the pics - actually I have been there (in1975) but did not know enough to begin a search into my Gibson/Smith roots.

In my search for William Smith's parents, I wonder if it is possible to access the bmd records from St. Augustine's, Hedon.  The family tradition is that both William Smith and Elizabeth Atkinson were baptized there.  We now know that they were married at St.Nicholas, Hollym on August 14, 1861 - those records also would provide names of parents.
