Identification of uniform
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 09:52 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I've received a message from a distant relative and he says, "I have been told that my great great grandfather John Ogle (1856-1926) had a brother that served in the military and may have travelled to India.    I am attaching two possible photographs of his brother.  Do the photographs contain any clues about time period or branch of service."

I'm wondering if you can give me any help on this.

Hi onetiger :)

I'm no military expert, but by the looks of the photos you have two different generations here...the first photo, of the two men, is probably 1860s-1870s (but as they are wearing non-standard clothing I can't be sure of that.  It would be helpful to see the whole of the card that the photo is stuck to, as it might provide some valuable dating clues if the armed forces boffins are not able to pinpoint the uniform for you).

The second photo looks like First World War vintage.

Cheers
Prue

Second image is a private possibly serving in the 7th Bt Lancashire Fusiliers.

I agree with Prue, the second is circa WW1. I believe the web belt is the 1908 pattern. My first thought was that the badge says LF - for Lancashire Fusiliers. But they were the 40th Regiment so I am unsure what the 7 means. It may be for their 7th Battalion which fought in Egypt during WW1.

There also appears to be a hint of a crease in his trousers - which again suggests sometime after late Edwardian. With a surname like Ogle, you should be able to find a medal card for him.

For the first, you need a really high resolution scan of just the helmet badge to do any more.

Ken

I want to thank you all for the information you have been able to give so far.  My relative has emailed me with some high res scans as requested but, thanks to yahoo mail compressing everything into .rar files, they have arrived on my computer at 72 dpi.
