Mary Mobsey death, ?Dorking
« on: Wednesday 30 March 11 17:43 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me find a death record for Mary Mobsey, who was baptized Mary Tilt on 31st August 1781 in Dorking?  She married Henry Mobsey in Dorking on 30th June 1800.  Her father John Tilt left her £500 in his will, which he wrote in 1802, but I have lost all trace of her since.

I would assume she stayed in Surrey, but of course I can't be sure.

With thanks for any assistance,

Beetle.

Marriage entry shows surname as Mobsby - not Mobsey - can you confirm correct spelling please

You are quite right, Carole.  Checking with the will, it does say Mobsby, not Mobsey as I thought.  Maybe this is why I've got stuck!

Thank you for pointing this out.

Hi

Burial
St George the Martyr Southwark
Mary Mobsby aged 32 York Buildings Kent Road

The death duty register entry for John Tilt's will held at The National Archives might confirm whether this is his daughter's death.

A Henry Mobsby widower married a Mary Wills in Lambeth in 1815. On the baptism of their children Henry was a grocer. He died in Newington in 1849 aged 72.

Hello Valda,

Many thanks for this.  I think she is almost certainly my Mary Mobsby, as the age is right, the name is unusual and I can't find her elsewhere.  Her father John Tilt's will was proved in 1811, so that also fits with a death in 1813.

Please can you explain about the death duty register entry?  I did download John Tilt's will from The National Archive, but is there other documentation I ought to pursue?

Yours gratefully,

Beetle.

Hi

Read the last section of the 'Guide to wills in Surrey' at the top of the Rootschat Surrey boards

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,403332.0.html

It gives details on Death Duty registers

Many thanks for this steer, Valda.  My search has drawn a blank, but it was well worth a try.

Hi

The Death Duty Registers are held at The National Archives - there are no online death duty registers for Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills which was what John Tilt's will was.
