Manywounds
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 07:52 BST (UK) »
Hi   I am actually searching for the death of Theodore Goldschlager, an Austrian tailor who was better known as Teddy.
Family legend has it that he ran up large gambling debts and was 'eliminated' in a gangland reprisal in the 1940s.
I have found nothing on FreeBMD under that name but spotted the following.
Deaths in the March quarter of 1942, Manywounds Teddy aged 30,  Meriden District  ref    6d   905

I have found no other evidence of a Manywounds surname anywhere in the UK, and wonder if the name was just invented to enable someone just known as Teddy, who died a violent death, to be burried.  Before purchasing the death cert, I would be interested to know if there was a Theo Goldschlager, or any other Manywounds in Meriden district around then (if not it suggests the Manywounds name was an invention) or if anyone can add to my knowledge about the death itself.

After writing the previous message, I now think it was a false trail after all, for I have since found a former Canadian soldier of that name who died in the February of that year.  Thanks for your attention Rootschatters, I'm back to looking at Goldschlagers and Theodors throughout the UK, with a renewed focus on the London area.

To the Moderator:   I think you can remove this entire entry when time permits

I agree there do seem to be a number of Manywound family history websites, but all seem to be based on familiy lines in North America.  Somebody has since pointed out that the original name was in all probability, that of a North American Indian.
The Keyword in my search was 'UK' for other than the single death I found in 1942, a search of All Categories on FreeBMD between 1840-1960, produced no other Manywounds.

As it happens, I only picked this line as a possibility, for the guy I am seeking was an Austrian Jew, and as such may have undegone a name change during WW2 in order to conceal his nationality.  Perhaps I should be looking at the Isle of Man or at a Jewish regiment that fought on the UK side?     Roy G
