Cromwell Street Swindon
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 16:58 BST (UK) »
I am devouring all the old Swindon photographic books from the library and came across a picture of 26 Cromwell Street as a shop Swindon flour & corn Co.
The photograph was taken about 1910 so the note says.

I have a census entry for 26 Cromwell Street in 1891 but the family weren't shopkeepers so am a little puzzled as to when shops erupted down that Street.

I know it was knocked down so no chance of having a look these days - anybody remember it or know anything about the houses/shops?

Thanks.

No shops in 1901 - all inhabitants seemed to be working on the railways!

As you said, 1910/1911 #26 was a Corn Stores.

Hi,
Just noticed your post.

Shakespeare Wallis was living at 26 cromwell st in 1915.
His sons founded the Wallis's fish business and and Normans (Wallis) furniture business.

6 Cromwell Street was the premises of the wonderful photographer William Hooper. He would very likely be the one to have taken the photograph described in the first post. After he retired c1920 it became the premises of the excellent Frederick Christian Palmer. Both were highly skilled photographers.

We have lots of pics of this now-lost road here:
