William PATMORE of Wheathampstead, Herts.
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 16:10 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone this is my first post. Can anyone help me find the the burials of William Patmore yeoman of Wheathampstead, Herts. (who made will 1828 proved 1832) and his wife Elizabeth (Whethered) Patmore who was living in 1828. I have checked the NBI but found nothing.  After Wheathampstead, Harpenden or Sandrige parishes are a possibility. I live in Italy so cannot get to SoG or Herts Archives. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Do you know what years William & Elizabeth were born?

You have posted on the Herefordshire board - is that an error or is there a connection to Hereford

Thanks for your two helpful replies. My request should have been posted under Hertfordshire. Sorry Im a real beginner! I have looked at the Wheathampstead website previously but found nothing.  I have William Patmore's will proved 1832 which states he was a yeoman and owned messuages. His wife Elizabeth Wethered was bap 19/9/1773 Sandridge and they were married 14/1/1794 Wheathampstead. Ive noticed people born in Wheathampstead parish being baptised Harpenden which I gather only became a separate parish in 1859. Thats why I think they could be buried either Wheathampstead, Harpenden or perhaps Sandridge.

I have asked a Mod to move this post to Hertfordshire for you.
You are likely to get people who have local knowledge who can help.

Cimarra.

Hi Cimarra

The parish church of St Nicholas, Harpenden dates from the 13th Century, and parish records for St Nicholas are held at HALS from 1562.  Where the confusion may have arisen is that the old church was demolished in 1861 to make way for a larger building.

The parish church of St Helen, Wheathampstead pre-dates the Norman conquest. HALS hold records from 1690.

I have ancestors in this locale and you are quite right to want to check Harpenden, Redbourn, Sandridge and Wheathampstead.  It is also possible that they may have been buried in St Albans.

Rick :)

Thanks v. much Rick for the explanation about St. Nicholas Harpenden church and I will certainly take your advice and look for the burials at HALS or Sog in the locations you mention.

Forgot to say - I have checked the Redbourn MIs but there were no PATMORES listed.

This does not necessarily mean that he wasn't buried there.  He may be there without a memorial or his memorial may not have survived.  However, given his status, it would be unusual for there not to have been a memorial, and there are surviving memorials from the 1830s, so I think you can provisionally cross Redbourn off of your list.

The National Burial Index has a William Patmore buried at Sandridge in 1832 aged 82.  Can't see Elizabeth straight off though.
