Stranraer birth please
« on: Monday 04 April 11 17:14 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Would someone kindly post the birth information for

Elizabeth Skilling b. 1832 Stranraer, Wigtownshire.

She married George Watson in Stranraer in 1848 and I can't find her on the 1841 census records.

Thank you very much.

Thanks for the suggestion Allan.

The closest I can find in 1851 is Elizabeth Scullion age 12 born in Ireland, living in Stranraer with the Turnbull family.

In 1851, she is married already and is shown as Elizth Watson age 19, born Stranraer, Wigtownshire, living in Girvan, Ayrshire.

There seems to be an Elizabeth Skilling b. 1832 in Stranraer so I was hoping her birth record might hold some clues - like the name of parents..

I will try and get into the library tomorrow and have a look for you.
My Wife's Skillings came from ireland to girvan, moved to near stranraer
and then back up to ballantrae.
Their is an elizabeth skilling in there but born a little earlier.

Hi Susahs

Official registration only began in Scotland from 1855. Before this date, you can hope to find an entry in the Old Parish Registers for a birth or a christening. These entries were predominantly for the established Church of Scotland, ie presbyterian. Have you checked on IGI at www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true or on the official pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see whether any entries may show for her? If her family were not presbyterian will be harder to find an entry for her. Scotlands People now have the Roman Catholic baptisms database from available records which is also worth checking.

If she died in Scotland, her death cert should include her parents' names if known to the informant.

Thank you, Monica and Allan.

The marriage record I found on the IGI has
Elizabeth Scullion m. George Watson Aug. 28, 1848 Stranraer.

3 children:
Elizabeth Montgomery Watson b.1851  Girvan, Ayr with parents
George Watson and Elizabeth Sculan

Esther Watson b. 1849 Girvan with parents
George Watson and Elizabeth Scullun

Jane Watson b. 1853 Girvan with parents
George Watson and Elizabeth Skilling

The Elizabeth Scullion in 1841 living with the Turnbill family also has a resident named Margaret Beggs, 20.  In 1841, I also found a John Skilling aged 20 (b. Wigtownshire) living in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire) with a Beggs family.

Coincidence?  Do you think all these Elizabeths are the same person?  I'm not sure what to think.  Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Regards, Susan
