Isle of Man Birth for Eleanor Sarah FitzSimons
« on: Wednesday 06 April 11 02:21 BST (UK) »
Her father John was believed to be a Captain in Her Majesty's Army there and Eleanor Sarah was possibly born 1832-33 at Castletown, mother  possibly Elliza. I am looking for verification of this event and any siblings born on the Isle of Man.
Many thanks,
Maryc2

all baptismal records are on mormon micro film
John Fitzsimons m Eliza Coulthard  Mal 18200220 Eleanor was bapt Castletown St Marys 18270828 one of 5 ch I know of
in 1827 John was noted as Jailer, in 1834 , at bapt of son George noted as timber merchant - other 3 ch bapt in Malew
In 1841 George age 6 can be found lodging with Harriet Cannell schoolmistress in Parliament lane Castletown - can't find other members of fam in 1841 manx census tho father John was dead - The Times, Saturday, Dec 09, 1837; pg. 7; Issue 16595; col B.

Douglas, Isle of Man, Nov. 28 – It is our pain- ful duty to record the death of Mr. John Fitzsimon, at Castletown, who was drowned last night between that town and Derbyhaven. It appears that the unfortunate gentleman left home yesterday afternoon in his gig, with the intention of proceding to the parishes of Rushen and Arbory, which he accordingly did, and returned homewards by way of Cross- four-roads, Ballasella, and Derbyhaven, which latter place he left at a quarter before 6 o’clock, with the intention of proceeding to Castletown. About half past 6 o’clock, a man
who resides upon the road-side leading from Derbyhaven to Castletown, being at the door of his house, observed a horse and gig pass without a driver, which he instantly recognized
as belonging to Mr. Fitzsimon, and supposing that the animal had broken from and left its owner at the former place, he immediately secured it, and proceeded to Derbyhaven to make inquiries. Here, however, he was informed that Mr. Fitzsimon had proceeded homewards at the time above specified. Alarm having thus been excited, and finding that he had not reached the town, while the legs of his horse were found to be wet, as if lately in the water, a diligent search was instantly commenced by his friends along the shore from Castletown to Derbyhaven, when the body of the unfortunate gentleman was found between 7 and 8 o’clock near a solitary house, called the Big Cellar, quite lifeless. Upon examining his watch, it appears to have stood at five minutes past 6. It is supposed Mr. Fitzsimon must either have missed his way, or have gone towards the beach for the purpose of washing his horse’s legs, by the Big Cellar, found the waster deeper than anticipated, leaped out of his gig,
and thus lost his life.

some of his land was bought to support St Mark's

also noted on www.manxnotebook.com is stray:
Elear Sarah Fitzsimmons born: 28th August 1827, Isle of Man married: PETER THOMSON
died: 27th December 1915, Brisbane, Qld/Australia
Queensland death certificate 84/15

it also appears that one of his sons attended King Williams college - think he was accidentally shot when approached to close to a wreck - see www.manxnotebook.com/mxman/v04p002.htm

Thank you, Frances, for all that interesting info which offers most helpful leads. This is definitely the same lady who married Peter Thomson, Timber Merchant of Liverpool, in Great Boughton, Chester on 24 June 1865 in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and died Brisbane 1915. Her age is given on the certified copy of marriage I hold as 32 years.
Apparently her death certificate, which I have yet to obtain, records that she was 83 years 4 months and 2 days old, when she died on 27 December 1915, suggesting an 1822 birth. (? transcription error in the LDS records?). The interesting twist that has only just come to light for her descendants is that before she married Peter, she is shown in Great Boughton in the 1861 Census with husband Charles Henry Turner and children, Charles William, George Temple, Constance Annie, and Eleanor Beatrice. The Thomson family emigrated in 1869 to Qld on the Star Queen, without George Temple, but with daughter Blanche Sarah Thomson and later sons, James, Edwin and William Arthur. All the children from Eleanor Beatrice on used the name Thomson.

In the 1851 Census Eleanor Sarah appears on the Isle of Man, at Malew, as a dressmaker employing 6 apprentices.  A book called " History of Queensland: Its People and Industries" indicates that Eleanor Sarah spent "seven years at a college in Dublin after receiving private tuition under the late Rev Mr. Sabine", so I have yet to establish when she may have left the Isle of Man.
No marriage to Charles Henry Turner, Merchant of Liverpool, b. Prescott Lancashire, to Annie Rowena Dacre and the Rev. William.C. Turner, formerly of St John's Newfoundland, has yet come to light.  An article in the "Queenslander" newspaper of 29 December 1894 reporting Annie's death indicates she was the"mother-in'law of Mrs Peter Thomson, Wivenhoe". Charles Henry possibly died 1863 Manchester. Lots of interesting reading ahead. Thank you.

no error the 3 previous children were in Malew and I transcribed the Castletown entries - try the lds beta igi site as the registers retranscribed for new iCentre - Fitzsimmons was also I think the builder of King William's college - see appendix in Cumming's 1848 guide
