Lower Heyford Burials
« on: Wednesday 06 April 11 10:05 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what - aeta means? I've come across it on the late 16C burials in Lower Heyford, where it looks like the peoples ages at death have been recorded, ie - Mary Smith aeta 50.  Is as simple as estimated age?

Thanks.

Hi Anna,

There appears to be quite a few other entries that are similar.  I would guess you are are correct with estimated age.

Hi Anna,

I believe 'aeta' is an abbreviation for 'aetatis', and yes it does refer to the person's age.  Mary Smith aet 50 was either 50 years old, or 50 next birthday, so it's better than an estimate.  Hope this helps.

Hi Anna,

Just to confirm what others have stated; my English/Latin dictionary comes up with;

aetas :                    an age, stage, period of life, time, era.

What would be  a problem however is   if the vicar had written;

aeternus eternus :   eternal, everlasting, without end.

Still its nice to know incase I come across this in my searchings.

Thanks everyone, you've been very helpful. I thought it probably was latin, but I wouldn't have a clue how to translate it. I just wish that all incumbents had been thoughtful enough to include ages in their burial records!
