need help with 1877 Monaghan Town death
« on: Thursday 07 April 11 19:27 BST (UK) »
My great-great-great-grandfather, James McEntee, died in Monaghan Town in September 1877. In the box showing his profession/occupation it says, "Pensioner" followed by three letters that seem to be M.S.T. (possibly M.S.H. though doubtful). Does anyone know what those letters refer to. I have been told that only government/civil/military/police employees were granted pensions in those days. If I knew what his profession was perhaps I could discover more information about him from that source's records.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I will now attempt to post the whole certificate.

Moderator comment: only small portions of certificates are allowed to be posted on RootsChat.  Full certificate has therefore been removed.

If the first letter is an H it might be the Highland Light Infantry.

To save you time, it can't be the H L I as it wasn't founded until 1881.

Back to the drawing board!

It might be correct after all. Pre 1881 there was the 71st (Highland) Light Infantry

Hello J.T.A.-

Thanks for the link to the Highland Light Infantry. I will keep that under consideration and look into it further.
