Can anyone add anything to this info I have received lately?
I can confirm that the only marriage for a John Lowther from 1670 to 1812 is that to Mary Allison on 14 May 1696
Perhaps of interest is the fact that there are only 2 earlier records of marriage for a JL:
1617 Feb 10 John Lowther of Thornethwaite and Winifride Wood of the same
1599 Sept 23 Johne Lowther of Thornetwaite, Jennet Allinsone of same
(There is a gap in the records from 1659 to 1669)
It looks as if there has been Lowthers in Thornthwaite since at least 1599, but I'm not sure how you can be certain which, if any, is your branch. As far as I can see, the only references to JL are in Thornthwaite.
