Rolvenden lookup
« on: Sunday 10 April 11 15:36 BST (UK) »
Would some kind person please confirm for me a Rolvenden baptism which I have just come across on the new IGI.

15.3.1628 Thomas Chaderton s/o Alexander.

My Thomas lived in Hastings & the only Chadderton there before him was the Rector, name of Alexander. Alexander's children were baptised in Hastings from 1620 to 1634 & this fits nicely into a gap between baptisms in 1626 & 1631. Obviously I would like to find some reference to Hastings on the actual entry otherwise I can't really claim him as mine.

Welcome to RootsChat.

I have transcripts of Rolvenden PRs, & the note against Thomas's baptism, says (Rector) All Saints, Hastings.
So he's yours ;D

Brilliant! I don't suppose there are any other Chaddertons in the Rolvenden Regs? There must have been a reason for them being there at that time & the most likely is that they were visiting relatives. Unfortunately I've never found the marriage so don't know his wife's maiden name. Whatever, I'm very grateful, particularly for such a fast response.

Just thought - what was the name of the Rolvenden vicar at that time?

Thanks again

Jan

Hi Jan

There's nothing else for Chadderton or anything that looks likely (variant spellings, misspellings etc)

I'm afraid I don't know the name of the vicar at that time.
There might be something here, I haven't had time to read it yet, but it looks interesting:

Just looked at that page & apparently the Rector was either Thos Higginson or Richard Gyles. Alexander's youngest son was called Gyles - might be a connection there.

Thanks for all your help. Will keep searching.
