Bacton Crescent, Middlesex
« on: Friday 11 June 04 08:53 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the road where one of my ancestors was born.

In the 1871 census he gives his place of birth as Bacton Cres., Middx

There is only one Bacton anything in the current London A-Z, and looking at the 1862 map on the Motco site, it was called Baker St then.

Bacton Cres doesn't feature on the Lost London Streets site either

Can anyone offer any suggestions

(The ancestor's name was Henry Coleman and he was 39 in 1871, so I'm looking at around 1831)

Cheers

Chris

Hi Chris

According to my bits and pieces there was a  Bacton Street, Bethnal Green E2 up until 1997. Try this site for a list of all victorian London streets, I find it a very useful site indeed.

Hi Peter

That Bacton St is the one I'd found, and is called Baker St in the 1862 map

Do you think it's reasonable to assume that Bacton Crescent would have been roughly crescent-shaped?

Cheers

Hi Chris
Yes it would seem logical that it would be cresant shaped, but dont take it for granted. It could be any shaped road that connects to the same highway at both ends. Its also possible that over the years what with new traffic systems that some of the cresants are now cul-de-sacs.
Not a lot of use am I.

Can I just make the observation that "Bacton Cres" is rather more specific than usual when a birthplace is specified in census.

That to me makes it more likely than not that the place was very near where he resided in 1871. Try finding the 1871 address on old-maps (or wherever) and scout around locally.

Hi Pauline

It is unusual - so I thought I'd been given a real gift, until I tried to find it!!

In the same census his eldest son has Caledonia Cres as birthplace, but the other 5 children just have London

The census is for Caledonian Crescent, near Kings Cross station

I've looked at the 1830 map for that area (before the station was built) but still no joy

Cheers

Just went through the 1861 census street index, and I couldn't find a Bacton (anything) in there either. Don't know what to suggest now.

Now do I feel stupid?

Thanks for that Peter. My next stage was going to have to be to resort back to the original census again.

I suppose the moral is "always take a photocopy"

Cheers
