Matthew OSCROFT birth
« on: Wednesday 13 April 11 01:58 BST (UK) »
Hi
My g-g-g-grandfather was Matthew Oscroft who married Rebecca Slack in Mansfield in 1811.  My problem is I don't seem to be able to isolate his birth.  As Rebecca was born c1789 I think it's worth assuming, dangerous I know ::), that Matthew was born on a similar date.  Following that theory I have found two births/christenings but for the life of me can't work out which one could be him.

1. Matthew Oscroft b15/9/1791 at Sutton-in-Ashfield.

2. Mathew Oscroft  ch 28/6/1789 at Eakring
F: John & M: Mary Bomer

I am hoping for some inspiration please from you good people as I've run out of ideas.

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob

The baptism at Sutton Independent in 1791 doesn't give name of parents on the Notts FHS CD or the IGI.

There is this burial at Sutton in Ashfield
Matthew Oscroft 6.6. 1795 son of Thomas & Sarah.

There is also this burial at Mansfield
Matthew Oscroft 13.10.1844 aged 55, Newgate Lane. which would put his birth at 1789.

There is also this marriage at Sutton in Ashfield
Matthew Oscroft m Sarah Allcock 14.5. 1822.

Just trying to eliminate -  I'll see if I can find anything on the Matthew born in Eaking.

Hi again

The Mathew Oscroft  bapt  28/6/1789 at Eakring seems to be the only Oscroft that was baptised there.  John & Mary had 4 other children which were baptised at Mansfield.   John Oscroft & Mary Bomer married in Mansfield 16.2. 1789.

Hi Carol

Thanks for your replies.  You have confirmed what I have found AND thrown in a handy buriel, the one in Sutton in 1795.  Now I don't want to jump to a hasty conclusion but that could be the Matthew born in 1791 - just thinking out loud so to speak ::)

Up until recently I thought my Matthew was the one buriel in 1844 (although there was another in  Radford in 1842) but now I find that Rebecca is living with her daughter Mary, and her husband Alfred Flinders, in  1841.  I can't find a Matthew on the 1841 census, but I don't suppose that's unusual.  In 1851 Rebecca is a widow.

I must say that I am leaning towards the Matthew baptised in Eakring in 1789.

Thanks again

Hi Bob,

I think this is Matthew in 1841:

1841 census: Newgate Lane, Mansfield, Notts (ref: HO107/859, Book 2, Folio 38, Page 16)
Mathew Ascroft, 50, F W Knitter, Y
Samuel Clarke, 9, Y

His age would have been rounded to 50-54 (born 1787-1791) - so it doesn't much help narrow him down to one or the other.

Thanks Alexander, that looks like him alright.  Also Matthew's eldest, at least known to me, was Anne born in 1812 who married Samuel Clarke in 1831.   So the upshot is that he was living with his daughter Anne and his wife Rebecca with their daughter Mary who was my g-g-grandmother.

Still not really any closer I agree, but I'm still leaning towards the 1789 birth in Eakring.

Hello Bob,

My husband has Oxcroft / Oscroft ancestors.  I have discovered some information about your Matthew that I would like to pass on to you.
