Do you need a place visited in Sussex?
« on: Saturday 23 April 05 21:08 BST (UK) »
Do you live a long way from Sussex, but need a place visited?

Over the summer months I will be travelling all over East Sussex for various cricket matches, probably once or twice a week. I cannot guarantee to be anywhere (or everywhere either), but if you would like me to, I can find half an hour when going to or from a match to stop off on the way.

If this would help any of you, please let me have the details of where you would like visited and what you need to know. I may not get there, and may not find what is required, but I will do what I can. Churchyards, farms, streets, villages, memorials or whatever.

All you have to do is ask!

I would like to take up your kind offer.  My interest is in Horsham where my grandparents were married and raised five children-their names were ERNEST, FRANK, GERTRUDE, IRIS, EVIE  Address was 12 Trafalgar Road, His name was GEORGE HOWARD married to EVA MAY WELLS he was a soldier in WW1 and served abroad as a stretcher bearer.  I think he was also a bricksetter at one time.
Thanking you in advance

VJ,

I have noted the details and will follow this up when I am next in the Gatwick area (West Sussex), but this may not be for some weeks. There are two churches shown on the road map as well, so I will have a look in them as well if I have time. If all else fails I am due there in December for a business meeting!

if you get time could you please visit this place? I am not sure of the exact location but if you had a roadmap i'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find.

It used to be the home of my Great Grandad and his parents in the early 1900's

Mary Lincer - Wife
Lawrence - Son
Emma - Dau
Alice - Dau

I live in Sussex and occasionally drive through Small Dole.  I am not sure that I can add much to what it says on their website though.  It is a fairly small place.  I have not noticed much about it I'm afraid.  Its claim to fame as far as we are concerned is that is has a firm that delivers central heating oil!   I could go and look if you tell me exactly what you want.

Thanks for the information Andrea, i had no idea of the heating connection, i've always wondered when they moved out? Because as far as i know they owned and worked on the property, i have no idea if it was inherited by one of the children when the parents died or if the parents sold it. I don't know if that information can be found out from anywhere?

Sorry, I did not mean that house had the heating connection  but the village!   Have you looked for a will?   They are indexed on fiche after 1858 and available at the FRC in London but I expect other places have them too.  Jonathan W (moderator) was offering will look ups when he goes to Holborn (the will place now) so it might be worth keeping an eye out for his next one but you would need a date of death.   There are various books about tracing the history of a house and they would tell you how to look at the land registry details to see when the house was sold.  Have you thought of writing to the current owners and asking them?   Or even ringing them up.  Many people are really interested in the past owners of their house and as they are in the village they could ask the local history society if anyone knows about your family.
