Griffiths Valuation Agnomen listing
« on: Friday 15 April 11 15:56 BST (UK) »
I have been looking through Griffith's Valuation and I am trying to understand some of the terms and listing.

First was there age limitations on who was listed as "Occupiers", a would a son as young as three be listed with a father? Why would a wife not be listed along with this.

I have two James listed with one having  the agnomen (Little) and the another having the agnomen (Long). These are both capitalized, what do they mean? Was one person a "little" person (i.e. short, young not tall) and the other tall? Or are these something else like a formal middle name?

Some of these are very straight forward but others are not clear at all.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Walter

If there were 2 families in the same area with same surname they would be give an 'additional' pet name to distinguish between the 2 families..if one family was taller then they'd be possibly know as the Long ones...

Griffith's is not a population census.
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Griffith's Valuation only lists the head of household.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
A slight correction to Aghadowey's definition. Griffiths Valuation lists the person in the household who signed the lease and is therefore responsible for the rent. This will usually be the head of household  but not always.
