William James Carew 1763 and Ann Brunning Monkton 1771
« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 11:06 BST (UK) »
Can someone help me with a baptism look-up up for a William James born Carew (according to the 1851 Census) in 1763  and also his wife Ann Brunning born Monkton in 1771 (again according to the 1851 Census).   They were married in Stackpole in 1789.

In the hope this is has some new info, from my database of all the parish registers of Stackpole Elidor, from the Mrge register 1781 to 1812 I note ;
17 Oct 1789 ~ William James of Stackpole Elidor mrd Anne Brunning of Stackpole Elidor by banns in front of Henry Hood. Both made their mark in the presence of Thomas James and James Williams.
James Williams is believed to be the parish clerk at this time

OK., I know the abreviated info is on Monkton Benefice, but it does contain a few errors.
If no one supplies you the info in the meantime, I hope to be up at the R.O. next week so will add to my 'to do' list.

I was up at the Rec Off today and searched the baptism register of Carew 1760 t0 1765 for the baptism of William James, ((I searched 3 times)) alas I failed to find anything of interest other than there are David, Benjamin and William James all having children baptised at Carew around the time of your interest.
I searched Monkton Baptism Register for 1768 to 1775 for the baptism of Ann Brunning at Monkton, alas again there was no mention of her, indeed no mention of the surname in the parish, I went on to look further and came up with the following ;
From my database of all parish registers for Pembroke St Mary 1714 to 1950’s from the mrge register which covers 1755 to 1802 I note ;
(Day lost) Nov. 1764 Joseph Brunning otp mrd Jane Bren otp by banns in front of Joseph Hughes. Both made their mark in the presence of William Froyn and James Harries
(Note William Froyn was parish clerk at this time).

From my complete transcription of the parish registers of Stackpole Elidor I note in the mrge register covering 1781 to 1812 the following
17 Oct 1789 William James of Stackpole Elidor mrd Anne Brunning of Stackpole Elidor by banns in fron of Henry Hood. Both made their mark in the presence of Thomas James and James Williams.

No doubt you have made reference to the St Twynells Mrge Register on the net and seen the mrge of John Brunning to Ann Owens 12 Oct 1782.

It is quite possible that John & Ann had a William bap 27 Jun 1784 at Bosh.

Alas this information does not give you Anne’s baptism, but it might come in useful for the future

Deep thought and inspiration required

Thank you very much for looking for me, as you say although the results are not what i wished to hear they are useful and perhaps i can narrow possibilities by tieing up other James lines.

William and Ann were married in 1789 so it is unlikely that the William James born in 1784 would be my William.

Although William and Ann were married in Stackpole they did not stay there and are not buried there.   They may well be buried at St Mary's Pembroke sometime between 1861 and 1871

I have a theory as to the parents of Ann Brunning but no strong evidence as yet what is clear is that while there were Brunning's and Brinning's in the area they were never a large family so it is entirely probable that all are in some way related.

I have planned to visit Pembrokeshire staying in stackpole in two weeks time so will make a visit or two to the records office, if I can track down when they died their ages might give me some further clarity as to when they were born as their are significant variances in their ages across the 1841, 51 and 61 census although i am quite certain that i do have the same couple identified across all three census.

It's the curse of popular names it seems.

thank you again for your help
Best wishes

William James was baptised in 1784, there is no evidence at all to suggest that the William baptised in 1784 was born in the same year. There are plenty of examples of baptism from aged 2 yr to adult to 80 yrs+ on her death bed in Pembrokeshire. My own ancestor was baptised the year he mrd.

Brunning and Brinning are certainly related families, that can be proven quite easily, it is quite lightly that the Pembrokeshire line of the Brinn family also came out of the ancestry.

From my transcription of all the parish registers of Pembroke St Mary 1711 to the 1950's, I note the following from the burial register covering the period 1839 to 1882 ;
Ann James of the Dock buried 06 Aug 1846 aged 56 yrs by C. Philipps
Ann James of Maiden Wells buried 23 Aug 1851 aged 8 yrs by Essex Holcombe
Ann James of the Green buried 28 Jan 1852 aged 34 yrs by W.M.D. Berrington
Ann James of Dunn’s Row buried 05 Aug 1863 aged 100 yrs by C. Douglas
Ann James of the Dock buried 04 Aug 1842 aged 21 yrs by W. Bowling.
William James of the East End buried 17 Dec 1860 aged 33 yrs by C. Douglas
William Henry James buried 19 Mar 1861 aged 5 months by Thos Fanvel.

(Dunn’s Row like its near neighbour round the corner Bankers Row have long been demolished)

Since there is references to Kingsfold in your research which is in the parish of Pembroke St Michael I turned to my transcription of the parish registers for Pembs St Michael 1714 to 1950’s and not in the burial register which covers 1846 to 1870 the following ;
16 Feb 1864 Mary James of Kingsfold aged 80 yrs buried by D.W. Morris
04 Jan 1866 Mary James of the Eastend aged 65 yrs buried by D.W. Morris
20 Jun 1852 William James of Kingsfold aged 79 yrs buried by John Owen

There is no reference to any burial of an Ann James burial between 1846 and 1870 at Pembroke St Michael.

Look forward to seeing you at the Rec Off.

Thank you for this in the 1851 census William and Ann James were living at No1  Bankers Row it seems likely that Ann James who died in Dunn Row in 1863 with a given age of 100 years might well be the Ann James I am looking for the age is out by a good 17 years but since i have never found a truly consistent age for either Ann or William there may well have been some exaggeration over time.

In 1841 they were living in Church Terrace St Daniels Hill and in 1838 they were most probably living in Kingsfold the addess given by their daughter when she married.

Their daughter Elizabeth and husband Thomas James  were living in Gumfeston in 1861 so it is concievable that if William outlived Ann he may well have gone to live with his youngest daughter in Gumfeston.
