Henry Edward PRICE, baptised St Lawrence, Warminster
« on: Wednesday 20 April 11 13:01 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm trying to trace the parents of Henry Edward Price, baptised at St Lawrence Chapel, Warminster in summer 1824 (possibly July).  I suspect he was illegitimate.

Does anybody know who his parents were?

Aha - as I suspected, no father.
Thank you so much, could you just advise though - what is IGI?
Thanks, Emma.

Hi Emma

IGI is the International Genealogy Index which is an excellent source and often a first port of call. It is the site set up by the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and can be found at

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

The site is currently undergoing transition. If you get the older version go to Search Records and click Advanced Search. Select International Genealogy Index. You can enter individual names but you can also enter just parents' names and you can get a list of siblings.

Don't necessarily trust everything you see. If it's an extracted record then it has been transcribed from a Parish register but sometimes you will find that an LDS member has submitted the information which is less trustworthy. However, what you find will certainly point you in the right direction

Happy hunting

Robyn

Henry Price wrote a memoire when he was 80 years old and in it he tells of tracking down and meeting his Father in 1849. He, George Edwards, had been, according to Henry's account, the organist at Henry's Mother's church. He moved away "and hid himself", presumably to avoid a scandal. I'm interested, eg213, where your interest stems from. I found your exchange on this website by accident and am intrigued.

Hi Tim,
Sorry for this delayed reply, I've only just noticed your question. My interest is purely academic.  I'm a social historian and have been looking at Price's autobiography, I hadn't noticed that he later wrote about his father. Could you point out which pages he mentions this?  What about you- what's your interest in Henry?
Emma.

Hi Emma
I volunteer part time at Islington Museum, which is linked to Islington Local History Centre (LHC), the holder of the borough archives. Henry Price's memoir is held by LHC and I was asked by one of the LHC staff to look at the book and compile a summary of it as it had not been catalogued. As a result there is a recently-added entry on ArchivesHub about the book at: http://archiveshub.ac.uk/data/gb1032s-hep.
Henry first mentions his father on page 144 and the very touching story continues on the even-numbered pages up to 150.
I assume you've got a photocopy of the book and perhaps you were put onto it by the William Morris connection. I've found it fascinating to read and my current aim is to write a summary of Price's life story, but this will take some time.
Tim
