J H Dando Grocery Shop Durham
« on: Friday 22 April 11 14:52 BST (UK) »
Hello :)

Wow, third post in my first two days of joining!

I was just wondering if anybody knows of John Henry Dando's grocery store in County Durham..

All I know is information my Grandfather has given me- that John Henry Dando (my great-great grandfather) owned  "J H Dando" grocery shop.. I'm not sure if it was "J H Dando's" or any other info.

John Henry Dando was born in 1864 in Witton Park, Auckland, Durham so I assume the shop was around this location. He died in 1926, a couple of years before my Grandad was born and I was just curious as to whether the shop or building is still there or not or what happened to it. Unfortunately I live a long way away and so am unable to visit to have a look around.

Anyway, if anybody knows of the area or shop, please do let me know, I'd be very interested to find out any info about it :)

Many thanks and best wishes,
Tansy

Hi Tansy

The 1901 census gives them living at 166 - 168 Cannon Street, Middlesbrough.    It says that John Henry is working on his own account as a Grocer "at home", so maybe Cannon Street is the shop, or certainly around the time of 1901?

If its the same Cannon Street, it does still exist on googlemaps but it does look like its an industrial area now.

Ahh thank you,

Yes I guess it being in Middlesborough would make more sense as their children were born there (oops!)... and that's interesting, indeed perhaps Cannon Street is the shop :) I had a look on Google maps and it's such  a shame the area is industrial now- it would have been lovely to have seen the original location.

Ah well! :P
Thank you very much for your help :)

Best wishes,
Tansy

Go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and if you enter the coords 448430, 520070, it will centre the map on Cannon Street and you can see the  area on the old maps. Or go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html and enter the same coordinates for a better 1/2500 maps of various dates.

Or you could try here http://rememberwhen.gazettelive.co.uk/2009/07/cannon-street.html there's an article plus several photos of Cannon Street and the surrounding area. (In 1901 my great grandads brother was living at 197 Cannon Street)

In 1911 John Henry and family were at 10 Croydon Road but it is described as a "Private House".

In another street is a bulding described as "House and Shop" so Croydon Road is probably where he lived and not the shop.

Hi Tansy, I just did a google search on 166 Cannon Street and your post came up so I have joined RootsChat. My great grandfather was John Henry Dando. I am the grand-daughter of his son Charles (born 1899) who emigrated to Australia at the end of the first world war.

Hi Tansy,
Have you found "the fount of all Dandos"?

My wife is a Dando and her ancestors are from Clutton in Somerset. Many of them moved north when the Somerset coalfields started to decline. some miners went to the Welsh valleys.  My "in laws" moved to the mines around Dudley and more moved on to the Lancashire coalfields.

Dandos are all over the area from Compton Dando through High Littleton, and beyond.

Sorry if you already know this,
Malcolm

Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
