Fr Edward Kenny b. Durrow, Co Laois
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 09:30 BST (UK) »
Hi
In my search for the origins of my Kennys, I remember that a Fr Kenny used to come and visit us when I was a very small child.  In the local cemetery there is a grave for Fr Edward Kenny who was born in Durrow, Co Laois.  He was ordained on 8th June 1947 and died on 13 October 1988.  No birth date mentioned.
Would someone be able to look up his ancestry to see if it ties in with a John Kenny who was born about 1821, where we don't know and who died in Australia 25 December 1874.  A long shot I know.  For anyone of Fr Kenny's family I have a photo of his gravestone.
Thanks
Robyn

The latest available census is 1911 and I suspect he would have been born after that date if ordained 36 years later.

If you know what church(es) he was attached to you could try asking if they have any biographical details. The local newspapers might also have included family information if there was an obituary published.

Finding details of John Kenny born c1821 is also difficult. Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 and many church records don't go back to early 1800s. Does his Australian death (or a marriage certificate) list any clues such as birthplace or parents?)

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.

Hi
Sorry Neil I don't know - I'm assuming north shields is in England.
Death certificates in Western Australia when John died had very little info on them so are no help in the search.  I haven't been able to locate a marriage certificate.  It probably happened in Middlesex as he was a sapper at Chatham.
Thanks I'll take a look at the sites you mention.

Robyn

Do you know the name of John Kenny's wife? If so, have a look at www.freebmd.org.uk
