Mansfield 1841 Occupation?
« on: Saturday 23 April 11 20:23 BST (UK) »
I`m looking at the 1841 census for Mansfield, district 5, image 7 (Ancestry) and most of the men are described as "F.W.K".
Any ideas what this mean?  I`m hoping it may be something to do with weaving (or I`m looking at the wrong family)

Many thanks     Jane

FWK = Frame Work Knitter

Here is a link to the FWK Museum which also gives some history to the trade

Thanks very much Theresa -
if I am looking at the right chap - on the census in 1841 he is FWK and when his son got married in 1846 he was a weaver.  Do you think this is the same chap?

i have tons of ancestors in and around the mansfield area that worked as F.W.K's then on the next they are weavers and the next they are back to being F.W.K's. dont know if its the same job or whather my family members went back on forth from one job to the next, or maybe the enumorator thought one was the same as the other?

whats your family name that you are looking at just out of interest?

Hi Rachel
Thanks for your help.

His name was William Thurman born about 1788.  He`s still living in Mansfield in 1851 and his occupation is different again  but unfortunately the page is rather faded and I can`t make it out.

Hi Jane,

William's occupation in 1851 is Coal Higgler (sold coal, usually by horse & cart)....he is the same William who is on the 1841 with the  occupation as FWK (Frame work knitter)on both census they are living on Ratcliffe Gate, Mansfield.

There is no marriage showing for William & Sarah on the NFHS index, maybe because Sarah was from Leicester?

It seems the couple had five children christened at Mansfield between 1810 & 1820 - abode Ratcliff Gate & father's occupation as Stockinger (similar category as FWK).....can give you the names & dates if you do not have them?

Burials at St Peter's, Mansfield.

SARAH THURMAN - 11th May 1856 - aged 73 - abode Ratcliff Gate
WILLIAM THURMAN - 13th Aug 1857 - aged 70 - abode Ratcliff Gate

Regards

Sheila.

Hi Sheila

thanks so much for all of that.  The only birth I am sure about is for their son John who I believe was born in 1819.  I would be very interested to know about the others.

Kind regards          Jane

Sheila - Thanks very much for all of that.  The surname looks like Thorman on the 1841 census so that could well be him.

Thanks for taking the time to help me - I hope you are sitting at your computer eating lots of chocolate!
