1861/1871 Lookup Hodnet - Henderson

Could someone please look up George Henderson and his wife Emily for me.  I've located them on the 1881 census living in a place called Hodnet, which I think is near Shrewsbury (aged 50 & 51).  George was a soldier and was born in Chelsea and Emily was from Ashdown in Essex.

I'm trying to establish a link between this couple and my 3xgrandmother Annie White (nee Henderson) who was born around 1851, so any help would be appreciated.

Cant find a George Henderson living in Shropshire in 1871 that matches.

Married Soldiers' quarters, St Helier, Jersey

George Henderson, head of family, married, age 38, rank sergeant, born London, England
Emily Henderson, wife, age 36, wife to sergeant, born London, England

The description of the district looks like 2 Battn, 15th Regiment if this means anything.

Hi Jane,

Mmmm, I'm not really sure about these people you've found.  Obviously some of the info doesn't match the couple in Shropshire in 1881, but as I can't say for sure yet whether they are Annie's parents this doesn't count for much (although Annie did move to Oswestry pre-1881).  The only definite info I have at present is that Annie's dad was called George and he was a soldier (Annie having been born & married in London).  I've sent off to, hopefully, get Annie's birth certificate so things should be a bit clearer.

Hope you have some luck with the birth certificate.

You've probably already looked up George and Emily on the four 1861 census counties that are available on www.1837online, but just in case you haven't – they're not there either!

I think I may have discoved why they are not on the 1861 London census - I have found out that a 2nd battalion, 15th Regiment was in Malta in 1862 and that a lady called Caroline Amelia Henderson (born in Chelsea), daughter of George & Emily Henderson married a sergeant of the same battalion in that year.  So this could possibly be Annie's sister.

Still waiting for the birth certificate though.

Looks as though you could be on to something there. Are certificates from the GRO still taking forever to arrive?

The whole of the 1861 census has just become available on Ancestry so I had another look, but no George, Emily or Annie that fits the bill anywhere in England.
