Help needed - John Mack
« on: Monday 25 April 11 11:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I need some help with this puzzle, I am researching John Mack, on the 1911 census he is living in Woolwich with his wife Mary (although her actual name was Eliza!) and family. John says his birthplace is Chatham about 1874, sure enough I found a birth for John in 1874 in Brook, Chatham, parents Edward and Harriet The trouble is on his marriage certificate he gives his father as Henry. I realise I may have the wrong John in 1874 but no one else matches the details. It could just be an error on the marriage certificate.
However the real problem is so far I can't find John in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census. I'm hoping you can  ;D

Hi tempsford,

What do you already know that gives you confidence that you have the
right John in 1911?

Full details from the marriage cert might help somebody track him down
for you.

could well be that for example his mother remarried before 1881, and he carried his Stepfathers name thru the following census years - then when he married, he reverted to his real name.

Have you checked for deaths of the couple on the Birth Cert (Edward & Elizabeth) ?

Did you notice the John Mack c1874 PoB 'Canada' in 1901 - but already married to a Madeline?

I'm not sure I have the right John at all. I'm only going on the birthplace in the 1911 census  ;D which is why I want to find him in the earlier census to see if a different birthplace is given.
The marriage details are John Mack. 24. Bch. lab. of 2 Mill Lane Guildford. Son of Henry Mack. deceased, painter
Eliza Jane Pullen. 20 Sp, field worker. of 2 Mill Lane Guildford. Dau of ?
10 Dec 1898 Guildford Register office. Wits Albert and Ellen Maria Bromley.

Yes, John Mack born in 1899 in Guildford and poss Peter, birth registered in Jan qtr 1901 in Woolwich and also Eliza's son George Charles Pullen born 1896 in Guildford. I know its the right family on 1911 census as details have been verified by family members.

Sorry, I should have said, this was the only Peter less than one year old, so your
"possibly Peter" in reply #5 is looking a little less likely.
