Probate Calendar - cashier
« on: Monday 25 April 11 19:36 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm new to reseraching the probate calendars and I have come acorss something I am sure is very simple but I'm not sure what it means and would appreciate some help.

As I have been looking most of the "estate" has gone to children or a widow or perhaps another family member.
I have had two cases where the money appears to have been left to "George Trenwith cashier"

Can anyone explain what this means please.
Thanks in advance

The Probate Calendar usually does not show who inherits, but who has been granted probate or administration (possibly but not necessarily also a beneficiary)

I'm not sure, but I wonder if "cashier" in this context means a legal cashier who handles things where nobody has applied for probate. I hope someone knows more about it and can give a definitive answer . . . I'm far from confident  :-\

Hi Mike

Thanks for the reply.
Perhaps I got lucky the first few cases then as they did list children/widows etc !!!!  And what i am seeing now - the cashier - is the norm, as you suggest, the legal cashier.

I know to get more definitive answers I need to apply for copies, I was just curious, but thank you I appreciate your help :)

Hi Amanda,

I hope I haven't mislead you, as I have no specialist knowledge and was hoping someone else would be able to support or correct my suggestion.

None of the entries I've found in the probate calendars have mentioned a cashier.

I suspect that the man appointed as an executor of the estate was a cashier by profession.

Typically I overlooked the obvious answer ::)

I suspect newburychap may be right. It could be worth looking up George Trenwith to see if he was related to the departed, or associated in some way.

Totally agree with newburychap.

The only one I've found of mine who left a will left it to a lady who was a housewife(hence me thinking that they gave the persons profession!)

I've got quite a few old wills which appear to show that the estate etc. was left to the executors and not the family.  However, on closer reading, what has happened is that the executors are only holding the assets for distribution to the rightful heirs.
