As previously stated, the executor(s) are required to deal with the deceased's estate and distribute everything to the beneficiaries

Some beneficiaries act as executors themselves, others may employ a solicitor or other responsible person to do the job for them. Probate (or administration if there is no will) is granted to the person(s) dealing with the estate who may not even have been known to the deceased

Thanks everyone, thats very interesting as in this particular case the same name occured twice in two different wills.  I'll have to delve a little more as it isn't a family name at all.
