Kings Liverpool Reg 1885
« on: Wednesday 27 April 11 11:50 BST (UK) »
Whoops on my 1st. attempt.... I was trying to post the following.

I find the National Archives quite daunting but really need to trace the record for Hugh Byers b. 1864. Liverpool. Parents William & Jane. Enlisted in the Kings Liverpool Reg. 1885 aged 21. Reg. No. 1321. Don't have the Battallion No.  Left the Service 1893 aged 29 & 4mths. Think he remained a Private. Previous occupation Shoemaker. Hugh died in a Liverpool Workhouse in 1899 aged 35. Informant brother George.
Hugh had a son Joseph. But can't find a birth or marriage record in any of the usual sources. Wonder if this took place abroad......perhaps the Curragh.....or wherever the Kings were serving 1885 - 1893. I am waiting for Joseph's marriage cert. which will give me his age etc. But if he was born abroad would I need to trace his father's service record. I've tried the National Archives for other research but have always chickened out
I'd greatly appreciate your help but please keep it simple.
Warm Regards.

The reason you had problems with the National Archives is that only Findmypast have pre-WW1 service records online.

Also he did not leave army service in 1893. He would have been transferred to the Army Reserve then. He was discharged in 1897 having completed his 12 years. The army exercised its right to keep him full-time in uniform for an extra year because he was overseas when his 7 years was up. In the Army Reserve he would have received half pay in exchange for two weeks annual training.

The dates for Bermuda, and the move to Halifax, Nova Scotia, indicate that he was in the 1st Battalion. The 2nd Battalion were in India. The 1st Battalion left the Curragh on September 25th 1885 when he would have still been on his initial training at the Depot in Warrington. They were in Dublin until February 15th 1889 when they moved to Aldershot. Unfortunately they sailed to Nova Scotia just before the 1891 census.

Thanks so much to you all for the info. Light is dawning.
In the space of one day I've got an awful lot further.
