Little Coxwell - Sophia Neat baptism
« on: Saturday 30 April 11 01:36 BST (UK) »
Sophia Neat was born about 1800 probably in Little Coxwell. Does anyone have copies of the baptism PRs for this village? I'm trying to find her baptism and hence parents. She married Thomas Baxter 1827 in Coleshill and lived there during the 1841-1861 censuses. She died 1867. Many thanks.

Thanks for all this marvellous information Ian, it is much appreciated. It has got me wondering thoug wheter Sophia Neat married twice. The fact that she is about 31 when she married Thomas Baxter, the assumed transcription error of the surname West may be a married name from first husband (even though it states her condition as spinster when she married Thomas Baxter). Do you think you could have a look for me to see if there is a marriage between Sophia Neat and a Mr West and the suitable death of a Mr West please? Many thanks again for the information you've found for me.

Only 2 NEAT marriages in Coleshill, probably Sophia's brother William in 1818 and his daughter in 1848.

There were a couple of WEST burials but a bit too early in 1615 and 1619

Thank you Ian, I scribbled Neat quickly several times and I can make the N look a bit like a W. The written lower case 'a' is pretty similar to an 's' anyway. I'm more than happy that Sophia West is Sophia Neat even though she seems to have married rather late in life.

My social history knowledge of that period isn't that great, I wonder what factors could prevent a much younger marriage apart from maybe nursing elderly parents or a lack of available local talent? I'm not entirely comfortable with a first child at an age of 32 or 33 in that era though.

Hi Orsa,

Have you tried the IGI?  There is a Sophia West bapt. 1805 in Besselsleigh which is only
a couple of parishes or so, away from Coxwell.
