What happened to William Allan?
« on: Saturday 30 April 11 15:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace a William Allan who lived in Cathcart, Renfrewshire in the 1871 & 1881 census. I can find no trace of William, his wife Catherine & children Catherine, Margaret, John, william, James, Mary, Agnes Donald and Janet in the 1891 census. Catherine and some of the children are in the 1901 census in Cathcart, Lanarkshire but there is no sign of William. I also can't find a date of death for him. William was born about 1841 in Old Monkland. Any help would be appreciated.

I have just gone through another 30 credits on SP trying to find William Allan and his family in 1891 or William's death and census info for the rest of the family. Is anyone able to find a trace of them in 1891?
Thank you in advance

I LIKE A GOOD MYSTERY

I had a look on Scotlandpeople and found 2 William's 1 died 1889 age 60  in Calton and the other died 1891 age 62 in St Rollox  their both under Glasgow City region, as is Cathcart  - not under Lanark

give them a try,if you haven't already

Thanks for the suggestions but I don't think either are he. He was born in 1841 according to his baptismal records. In 1881 he was with his wife and family so I'm sure they would have given an age closer to his true age. In 1889 he would have been approx 48 and in 1891 closer to 50. I think a + 10 ten year difference in age  is unlikely don't you? This William is a real mystery.
Still puzzled....

remember the bapt record is the day he was bapt not the day/year he was born -  transcribing the the OPRs I have found kids who where born 1840 and not bapt until 10 year later -  this happened in one family when all the children where bapt on the same day -  and there were 6 of them

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.  I have found the birth and baptismal records for william so I know 1841 is his birth year. If only I could find the year he died. It's strange that I can't find any family members in the 1891 census but almost all pop up again in 1901.
Kind regards, Nan

Hi Nan  :)

Is Catherine noted as widowed on the 1901 census ?

Have you found Catherine's death certificate ?

Cath* All*n(other surname Clark*) death 1901 - 1944 , birth 1844 +/- 10 years gives 1 result
Catherine Allan(other surname Clark) death 1916 Cathcart Renfrew , born c1844

Thanks Ev. Yes I do have that information for Catherine Clark Allan. She is listed as a widow in the 1901 census. Most of her children were still living with her at that time  but by 1911  only Catherine, William, Agnes and Janet were still at home. It's William, her husband, who disappeared somewhere, somehow
