Stanley Kitchener May WW11
« on: Sunday 01 May 11 10:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find out about my old friend [deceased] Stanley Kitchener May who served in the Queens' Own Cameron Highlanders regiment during WW11. He was awarded the Military Medal - apparently this information was in the London Gazette [#37302] on 11 October 1945. My old friend never talked about his service and I don't know why he recieved the Military Medal. If there is a kind soul who can help me find out this information I would be extremely grateful.

hello queenie3
so far i,ve not been able to find the actual write up in the london gazette but it won,t have info regarding why he was given the mm all it gives is a mention such as service number and regiment , try this site for help as it,s all about the highlander regiments , www.qohldrs.co.uk/html/further_information.html  it may be pos to find more info through them also it is pos to get a shortened version of his service record but as your not his next of kin certain info is held back it would cost you £30 and you would also need a death cert as well if you look in here it tells you all about how to apply and you can download the forms as well , www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html .
hope this helps and all the best i hope you find what you are looking for
best wishes

Many thanks for the reply. I will persevere in the hopes of finding out more about Stanleys' service record. He and his wife  had no children and any family remnants still alive in England would be great nieces or nephews and as he had no contact with them there is no one in New Zealand but me to visit his grave each Poppy Day.
Thanks for the links. Much appreciated.

Hi Queenie3,
I have record of a Pte S K May 2929616 of the Camerons who was a POW and is listed in 1944 & 1945 as being in Stalag 11A. Altengrabow. His POW No is given as 138808.
With the rank of Pte he was probably in a Work Camp attached to 11A; that is if this is your man.

Looking elswhere the same man is listed as having bee in PG 78 Sulmona in 1943.

These records are not too accurate so by the time the list were compiled he had probably been moved.

 :) :)
This is definitely our man. He never said that he was a prisoner of war - thanks for that information- but he did say that he was in Italy and Germany during the war. Like so many of his generation he never talked of the war or his part in it. His health was damaged by the experiences he had but he still managed to work for 25 years at Dunlop Tyres.
As a matter of interest - is it documented what the main work was that prisoners at  Altengrabow were involved in? Was it mining?
I am very thrilled that you have found this information out - many thanks!
