Hello, I am new to this website and hope to trace back one of my Irish ancestors. My grandfather,  William Francis Cleary came from Clonmel. I don't know when he emigrated from Ireland but he married my grandmother in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1900. His date of birth is uncertain but in the marriage document he gave his age as 30 in 1900. In this same document, he gave his mother's and father's names as Mary and James respectively.  In another document, his date of birth is listed as Sept. 22, 1865 so I'm not sure what to believe.
In his thread, Shanew147 shows a link to census records from 1901. When I go to the link, at the top of the page is shows 1901/1911 census. I see an entry for James and Mary Cleary but I need help in confirming that the data on James and Mary reflects their ages as of 1901. If it is in fact 1901 data, then James and Mary may be a relative. By the way, I don't know if my grandfather had any siblings.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give me in this matter.
Regards
Mike Cleary

Hello Mike,

Can you post the link to the census entries your looking at?

That list of Cleary's is for 1901. You can use the search function at the end of that page to modify your search to include more details like first names, ages, townsland or switch to the 1911.

Which James and Mary are you most interested in? I presume the family living on King Street? I'm descended from the Ardgeeha Cleary's but I'm sure there's a connection somewhere along the lines. I have not made much progress on my g.g. grandfather's (Thomas Cleary) siblings. He married late in life and his children are living with their mother Mary in Ardgeeha in 1901.

Do you know William Cleary's father and where he lived?

Martin, it may or may not be that the James and Mary Cleary on King St. are related to my grandfather (William Francis Cleary).  There is nobody left on the Cleary side of my family who can fill in any of the blanks as far as my ancestors are concerned.  I hope to find some concrete info on William's side of the family in the near future but the date of birth inconsistency is a real problem. If he was born in 1870 (as shown on the marriage document), James and Mary Cleary may be his parents but if he was born in 1865 obviously not.

Regards

If you just had the 1901 census to reference one would say that it was highly unlikely that James & Mary were his parents BUT looking at the 1911 census, just maybe they were.

http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Clonmel_East_Urban/King_Street/817311/

It says they are married 43 years (but this should be taken with a pinch of salt!), which would be 1868. You should also note that it says James was born in Kilkenny. They had 9 children and 2 are dead by 1911.

You can purchase 9 baptismal records for a father named James Cleary and mother named Mary between the years 1850 and 1890 in Clonmel for 20euro from rootsireland.ie

There is a William to a James Cleary and Mary in 1866 (included in the 9 records). Is this your William? is it too late? hmmmm. So many questions !

Or you could purchase 14 records for 30euro (covering all of Tipperary) just to be sure to be sure !

ps You need to register first.

Martin, thanks for the links.  I think I'll try to pin down my grandfathers full date of birth first.  My uncle showed my grandfather's date of birth as Sept. 22, 1865 on the death certificate but I am not sure of the accuracy given the marriage document showed him as 30 years old in 1900.  I really appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction.

Hello, I am new to this site and I'm not sure exactly how this all works but this is  message for Mike99,
My Great Grandfather was William Francis Cleary from Clonmel, Ireland who married a woman name Catherine (Christie) in Halifax, N.S. on November 20, 1900. I also have attestation papers from 1918 that gives his date of birth as Dec 27, 1869. His parents names are James and Mary. I have more information if you think this is the same person.
