Military records-Matthews

Not sure if I am in the correct place but I am trying to find my GreatGreat Grandad but with the name Matthews it isn't easy. But then I found out he was a Captain in the Merchant Service.
He had died by the time my Great Grandad had married in 1886 in Tavistock and I cannot find his death either.
Any info regarding his military service or death or birth would be grateful, thanks
His name was James Alexander Matthews

Service in the merchant navy was not classed as military. So assuming he did not have another career in the armed services you need to contact - www.nmm.ac.uk
