on a page of the 1823 Rerrick marriage register is an entry as follows

Thomas Jone of the preventative service in the parish of Girven .....

does anyone know what the preventative service was ??

He was  a type of Customs  officer / Coastguard -  specifically relative to the smuggling trade (the prevention and detection of)
