Nicholson of Limpsfield

Who was Sheila Mary Nicholson of 'Little Orchard', Limpsfield near Oxted?

Was she a dau. of John Herbert Nicholson and Alice née Hall?
Was she b. in 1914?  What was her father's occupation?

In 1947 she m. Val Pegge who was a colonial administrator in Nigeria.
I imagine he would have retired when that country gained its independence in 1960, but I think the marriage had broken up by then.  I can't find her death or remarriage anywhere, though somehow I doubt she would have stayed in Nigeria -- or is someone going to tell me it's a highly desirable place for ex-pats to live?

Any ideas where I might find out more about her?

Hi wee Hugh

Have you checked for her death under her maiden surname?

There was a death notice in The Times on 20 April 1965:

NICHOLSON on April 19, 1965, at Little Orchard, Limpsfield, Surrey, peacefully after a long illness, ALICE widow of JOHN HERBERT NICHOLSON and dear mother of Margaret Mathews and Sheila Nicholson.  Funeral at St Peter's Limpsfield on Wednesday at 3:15pm.  ..

Unfortunately John Herbert's death notice just says beloved husband of Alice

Thanks, Dazey.

It hadn't occurred to me that she might have reverted to her maiden name.

She may well have remarried.  Unfortunately there are hundreds named Sheila M. Nicholson in the marriage indexes after that date, so I doubt I'll find her.  But that was a helpful suggestion, all the same -- and you've pretty much confirmed that I had the right parents.

ChrisMat,

On 21 July 1947 she m. Val Pegge, youngest son of my mother's aunt Milly Brown.  I don't think the marriage lasted, but I'd be interested to know whether there were any children and what became of her.  Is she still alive at 96, and if not when and where did she die?

Can you also tell me when and where she was born?

And what can I tell you about the Pegge connection in return?

I'm sending you a personal message so that you can reply by eMail if you prefer.
