Swatman Family Ireland
« on: Friday 06 May 11 21:32 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks, I am looking into the background of the swatman family. We are based in Ireland. I have traced the family back to Norfolk in 1841. What I need to know is how Robert Swatman (born 1865 approx) got from Norfolk to Ireland. His father was James & mother Rebecca. I cant trace him between 1901 when he was in England and 1911 when he was in Kilkenny Ireland. If anyone can help it would be great.

Welcome to Rootschat. Ireland was part of the U.K. so records weren't kept of people travelling between Ireland and England, Wales and Scotland.

Here's a link to the family in 1911 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kilkenny/Castlecomer/Kilkenny_Street/565441

Robert's wife was born in Kilkenny which may be why the family moved there but the children were born in different parts of Ireland- c1891 Co.Antrim (or 1890 Longford?); c1892 Limerick; 1898 Ardee district, Co.Louth; 1906 Castlecomer district, Co.Kilkenny. Also (possibly) Charlotte 1908-1909 Castlecomer district).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello Ladlylawlor,

welcome to rootschat  :)

I see you have traced the family back and I am not sure what you mean by how he 'got from Norfolk to Ireland'.

1901 RG13; Piece: 1841; Folio: 87; Page: 35
has Maggie and the children in Norfolk. She is a soldier's wife so it can be assumed that it how Robert and she met and married.
I can't see your Robert in census  :-\

Are you sure that he is the son of James and Rebecca? That one looks to be married to Martha in 1901. ???

regards
heywood

Do you have his marriage details?

Family Search has a marriage with the same reference for:

Robert Swatman
1889 (July-September) Kilkenny Registration district
Vol 3 pg 309

Margaret Boran
1889 (July-September) Kilkenny Registration district
Vol 3 pg 309

Hi Heywood

Only starting at this game  so dont have marriage certs. Thinking of heading to castlecomer in kilkenny to try and find out more. Fairly sure the Robert Swatman noted in the kilkenny 1911 census is the same robert noted in the 1871 census in england age 6

Father James age 36
Wife Rebecca age 32
Sister Alicia age 13
Sister Maria age 10
Brother Robert age 6
Brother James age 3
Ann Swatman - Mother to James

Ann married Robert Swatman on 25/01/1816

As I said before any more informtion would be great

Simon

Before heading to Kilkenny you might want to do a bit of reading- many records will either not be available or will be in Dublin.
Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.

Hello Simon,
At the moment, this is what I see:

Free BMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
 Sep 1865   Forehoe  4b 169
 Robert Sweetman

Dec 1866  Norwich  4b 150
Robert  Swetman

1871 has 3 Roberts (similar surnames)  born 1862-1868 in Norfolk, living : Kings Lynn; Norwich and Wymondham areas.

1881  RG11; Piece: 1949; Folio: 94; Page: 30
Robert, 15 yrs son onf William and Alice - born Norwich

1881 RG11; Piece: 1956; Folio: 83; Page: 19
Robert 15 yrs son of James and Rebecca - born Wymondham

1891  RG12; Piece: 1535; Folio 18; Page 8
Rober Swatman 26 yrs born Wymondham is a lodger in Wymondham

Free BMD marriage - December 1892 Forehoe district Robert Swatman and Martha Ann/Marion Ann Tillett

1901 -Robert and Martha are in Wymondham with family

However, Maggie and the children are in Norwich.

So, if this is your family in 1911, I don't think your Robert is the son of James and Rebecca. However, a marriage certificate would give his father's name and also may give clues to his regiment.

What do you think?

You could send for the Kilkenny marriage: http://www.groireland.ie/

Hi

Having looked at the information I think you may be right about Robert been the son of william & alice. However they dont seem to be on any census before or after 1881. Any ideas where I might go from here as I am at a loss

Thanks S
