Hi fuschiablue
On the 1851 Census, where does it say Mary Ann was born? - was it Birmingham?
May be easier to track down where they were married.

Good luck

Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Can you please post reference numbers for the 1851 census? (I can't find the family in 1851)

If those ages are correct, then it does seem that William is not Mary Ann's child.  ;)

Thanks for the help everyone, its good to have so many responses to my first posting.Mary ann was born in Tipton, staffordshire.   I have today tracked down a John Cunnington who married a mary ann in 1840 but they were still married and  living in lincolnshire on the 1851 census.

I've checked and there are only a few mary ann bagnall's who got married in warwickshire or staffordshire one in 1846 and the other in 1850 both in west bromwich.  There is no John Cunnington on either, although on the 1846 marriage record on freebmd there is a John COCKIN (its transcribed in capitals) and i wonder if its worth getting the certificate to see if this is a misspelling of cunnington.

I'll carry on searching, thanks again everyone

Thank you for the 1851 ref nos keyboard. I have now located them. I believe I was unable to find them due to writing Mary Ann rather than Maryann as her name appears in the census.

john cunnington aged 33
Mary Ann  aged 24 wife
William aged 13 son
Elizabeth aged 7  months daughter

One thing though, which may make all the difference ... Maryann's age in the 1851 census is 29 NOT 24, so it is possible that William is her child.

Can anyone work out what it says for William's occupation?

Claire, it looks like that birth and marriage you found is a submitted record, so possibly not reliable.
