1861 Kent census look up Gravesend
« on: Monday 25 April 05 20:08 BST (UK) »
Hello there

Does anyone have access to the following information please?

I have found this family in the 1861 census

Dwelling 40 new road gravesend

alexander     42
florence        44
celia      17
thomas      12
emily mary   10
florence      8
henry alexander   5

I need to eliminate or confirm cecilia aged 17.  If it is my cecilia she should have been born in Deal in Kent, but further enquiries are not tying back to this family.

Her full name is Cecilia Hayward Watson born abt 1844

Another question would be if anyone has come across Hayward as a middle name before - its an odd one to me and I wondered about its origins - I found this detail on her wedding to James Gadd in Ticehurst Mar 1868

If the information is only available via 1837 then I will go that route, but hoped it would be at least worth posting in case anyone had some info
Thanks for your help in advance.
All the best

Hi Helen,

I've reached a dead end on my research for the time being and had a couple of credits left over at 1837.

Here's the complete family:

Alexander Watson, 42, Master Butcher, Born: Canterbury
Florence Watson, 44, Born: France .... (Unreadable)
Celia Watson, 17 Born: London
Thomas Watson, 12
Emily May Watson, 10
Florence Watson Watson (Yes! Her middle name is down as Watson although it looks as though it may have been crossed out!), 8
Henry Alexander/Heponder?? (Difficult to read) Watson, 5 -

The last 4 children are down as having been born in Gravesend

I have some unusual middle names in my family tree too and they have turned out to be the mother's maiden name (apparently quite a common practice in the 19th century) and in one case the youngest son took his father's middle name so he ended up with his paternal grandmother's maiden name!

Regards,

Allan

Hi Alan

Thanks so much for looking that up for me.  I think I can now discount it as she is born London and start again.

I had a gut feeling it was the wrong route, so at least I didnt go too far down it.

I know what you mean by middle names though.  There is a story in the family that one of the ladies became 'with child' from a lord of the manor.  This is very similar to my husbands grandad and the mother took the fathers surname as the childs middle name.
So I am wondering if Hayward was in fact the fathers surname!!!!
I think I am now at the marriage certificate purchase point, although I have found it disappointing in the past when you get father unknown, at least it draws a line!!!

You never know, and I think the intrigue is what keeps making me come back !

Sorry to hear you have come to a dead end.  Hopefully things will come together again - on one of my side I was stuck for over a year and then thanks to this site, got going again.

Best of luck with your searches.

All the best
Helen
