Accidental Shooting
« on: Monday 09 May 11 13:44 BST (UK) »
Agatha Bessie Taylor aged 23 of 19 Cadogan street Middlesbrough died from a revolver wound to the head accidentally inflicted by herself on 30/11/1918. An inquest was held on 2/12/1918 . The death  was then registered on 3/12/1918.In the Times on 2/12/1918 it said Mrs Taylor ,wife of Lieutenant Taylor( he was RAF) was examining a revolver belonging to her husband when it went off .(Her husband dies in 1965.)
I would like to get a copy of the report of the inquest but not sure how to proceed. Grateful for any help or more information on the case.

Thanks

Hi,

I would try the local archives to see if the file has survived; if it has not they should be able to tell you which local newspaper/papers would have carried a news items about it.

I've looked for two Inquests held in London; found 1 newspaper report and 1 actual file.   :)

Good Luck!

Teesside Archives is what you need, contact details are here:  http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archon/searches/locresult_details.asp?LR=20

However, I don't know whether you'll have any joy.  I wanted to know if there was an inquest into a death of one of my ancestors in Middlesbrough in 1923 and when I asked at Teesside Archives I was told that there aren't any surviving inquests from that period sadly.

However, if you find out differently, do let me know!

You may have more success than me with the newspapers at the Central Library though.  I didn't find anything - the local papers from that period are difficult to read on microfilm - but having said that, at the time I was searching I didn't know the definite date of death, and the information I had was misleading, so it was a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack.  I've yet to go back - on my list of things to do!

Good luck.

Hi,  I was at the ref. library today, I understand they were unable to help you with inquest side of your query.  I am going to the archives next Wednesday (18th). If you wish I will try and do a look up for you.

Eddie.

Hi Eddie - I'm assuming you're talking to tempogold and not me?  If me, then thank you for the offer but I don't need any lookups doing as I visit Teesside Archives myself.  I didn't want to ignore your post in case you were talking to me!

Hope tempogold takes you up on your offer.

Best wishes.

Hello,

I had a similar unusual Middlesbrough death. All my attempts to find the inquest failed- the archives who have most of them isn't Teesside it's the North Riding one in Northallerton or at least that's what I was told but they said most inquests were filled out on scraps of paper which were not kept.

However I found a full report of the inquest including quotes from family members in the 'Evening Gazette' from the time, certainly both Middlesbrough and Stockton Reference Libraries have these on microfilm. I just started looking through a few issues from the date of death and found it really quickly, it was a whole column of text giving a lot of details and cost me something like 20p to print out at the library. I have heard that the paper reported most if not all inquests.

Good luck,

Dan

Out of interest, what was her husband's name? I only ask because my wife is related to a Taylor family who were in Middlesbrough at this time.

Regards,

Dan
