Records from Royal Merchants Seamens Orphange Wanstead
« on: Tuesday 10 May 11 20:05 BST (UK) »
According to the 1911 census my Grandfathers Uncle was 11 and a student at the orphanage. Do any records other than the census survive that may help me trace him?
At some point he must have (if he was a good boy) been discharged

His name was James Winfield born c.1900 in South Shields County Durham

Any help welcome

Thanks

Cliff

I am not aware of any particular research regarding the Orphanage but I have found out that the records are kept by the Royal Merchant Navy School Foundation, Bearwood, Wokingham, Berkshire, RG11 5BG.
Telephone 0734 781864 or 0734 784209.
Hope this might help.

This is a very old post and you may have found what you want or no longer be interested - but if you haven't and still are - Bearwood College (Previously Royal Merchant Navy School, previously Royal Merchant Seamen's Orphanage, previously Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum) has extensive records including details of individual children. There is a long corridor where the name of every child entered from 1827 onwards is up on the wall. Contact, Archivist, Bearwood College.

The building is still there today as the Snaresbrook Crown Court:
